In a modern society, starting looking for a job, the most important thing to do – is to make a resume, in a case  you have not already done so. The recruiter or HR-manager at your first communication would ask you to provide information about the previous experience. Despite the mass of information and templates, and the Internet that provides unlimited access to all information on resume writing, very few people know how to make a resume correctly. But this resume is like a candidate’s “face”, that influences the employer’s decision to choose its owner for the further selection or not. So let’s discuss the main applicants’ mistakes in the resume writing.

1. Very often job seekers think that someone else can make a good resume for them. But when they came to the interview, applicants put the employer and themselves in the awkward position, telling something that does not correspond to their resume. You can always use tips and advice of more experienced professionals, but no one can make better resume than you.

2. Moreover, the candidates, seeing the job description and knowing that they do not match it, often send their resumes with a hope: “Maybe I am lucky.” However, HR-managers or recruiters will never waste their time for the consideration of such candidates. We really want the applicants not to spend their and employer’s time and to consider only those positions that match their skills and experience.

3. Many job seekers think that by specifying a few desired positions at the same time, they show their versatility and have better chances. But, such candidates are not interesting to the employer, as they usually do not know what they want and often are not experts in any of the areas specified.

4. There is the most ridiculous thing can make a potential candidate, – to send a resume with grammatical errors. Modern technologies reached the point that the Word is able to correct the mistakes for us, but such hints are often neglected by candidates, and inaccurate resume becomes an insurmountable obstacle to a “position of dream.” Such resumes would not be considered by the employer that is looking for competent staff. Though it is proved that literacy has no effect on candidate’s professional skills and capabilities, no one wants to undertake further interview with such a “professional.”

5. Quite often, in the resume applicants point out places of work, from the first to the last. But it is better to use the principle of “reverse”, beginning with a description of the last job and ending with the first work. Moreover, list all the posts you occupied. Such form will help the employer to evaluate your experience and your professional growth more objectively.

6. In the description of working career many job seekers completely forget about the indication of their duties, but it is the main thing that can “hook” the recruiter immediately after the analysis of the open position of the certain company. Quite often, the name of position does not reflect the duties completely; in different companies the names of the positions can be totally different. So in order to not to distort the information and allow the employer to evaluate your experiences properly, specify responsibilities for each position.

7. Conducting initial selection of resumes, recruiter pays attention not only to the experience, but also on existing skills, passed trainings and seminars, that definitely add points, especially if jobseeker does not fully meet the functional requirements of the job, but he has the required skills and certifications.

8. Listing all the positions, candidates sometimes make the “gaps” in their professional experience. This is a huge mistake. The candidate with unclear and inconsistent experience is in doubt, and we, recruiters, often ask ourselves: “Does he worth our time?”. After all, nobody is interested in candidates that haven’t been working for a long period of time.

9. Everybody knows the simple truth even from school – “brevity is the soul of wit,” but for some reason, we often forget about it. Resume on 5 pages – it is too much. It should be concise and clear. The employer or recruiter will not spend so much time to read the resume, and, in the best case, it will be left for later consideration.

10. Some candidates, sending a resume, do not find it necessary to specify the job title and write a cover letter. But, going through countless number of resumes, the recruiter is likely to focus not on a blank message with an attached file, but on a personal letter.

Based on the above, we can say that the key to successful job search is a well-written resume and a well-defined goal. A serious attitude to resume writing is the first step in the career and professional development.

The employer is able to form a positive impression of you from the very first lines of the resume and to consolidate the success you just have to show your skills in practice.
